Stonecrest should be a beacon of support for these enterprises, yet the focus seems to be skewed.

Supporting Black-Owned Businesses in Stonecrest is Essential

In a city where over 90% of the population is Black, it’s crucial that we prioritize the growth and success of Black-owned businesses. Stonecrest should be a beacon of support for these enterprises, yet the focus seems to be skewed. While industrial parks, predominantly owned and operated by non-Black individuals, receive substantial backing—particularly in areas like truck parking on gravel and the protection of Arabia Mountain, which attracts mostly non-resident visitors—the same level of support is not extended to Black-owned businesses. From the city’s inception, these two sectors have enjoyed considerable attention from local officials, overshadowing the need for strong policies and initiatives that champion the retention and growth of Afro-American businesses in our community. It’s time for Stonecrest to take pride in and actively promote its Black-owned businesses, ensuring they receive the support they deserve.

A MOVEMENT FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY

The New Black Wall Street Market is a family friendly shopping, dining and tour destination. It is inspired by the achievements of the pioneering spirit of O.W. Gurley and the several business partners that contributed to the success of the original ‘Black Wall Street’ in Tulsa Oklahoma.

They were able to build their wealth by spending within their community and it is said that money exchanged hands at least 16 times before it left the tightly knit Greenwood community. Due to their wealth, it was referred to as ‘Negro Wall Street’ by Booker T. Washington and thereafter became known as the “Black Wall Street” It was destroyed in 24 hours in 1921 due to acts of senseless racial violence. (Read More)
